THE RIDE: This trail is an advanced adventure through some of the state's most remote lands. With an estimated 10,000 sites, the Nine Mile Canyon area is one of this country's richest archaeological regions. Please do not disturb any of these sites. To do so is a violation of the American Artifacts and Antiquities Act, penalties may be severe. This is a strenuous ride that requires riders to be properly equipped—carry plenty of water and the necessary tools for repairs.
Directions: The turnoff to Nine Mile Canyon is about 2 miles East of WeJling- ton on US 191/6 (Soldier Creek Road). From the turnoff drive 33 miles to a BLM sign denoting Harmon Canyon. Park near here.
Start riding up Harmon Canyon heading south. After crossing through Nine Mile Creek, begin ascending the switchbacks that will rise over 2000 vertical feet in the next several miles. At the top of the canyon is a spectacular view of the Badlands Cliffs. Head east staying on the main road as it follows the terraced ledges. The road descends easily for the next 11 miles, eventually reaching the top of Prickly Pear Canyon. The road heading down this canyon is steep and rocky, descending 1500 feet through a series of switchbacks that hug the canyon walls. Take time to stop and enjoy the views here. After reaching the main canyon below, pedal 8 miles upstream past Gates canyon and Nulter Ranch to your vehicle at Harmon Canyon.
